His family planted its first vines in the Corbières in 1920. Gérard Bertrand did his first harvest in 1975 at the Château de Villemajou, alongside his father Georges. After his father’s accidental death in 1987, the former rugby player founded his own house five years later, bought the Domaine de Cigalus and the Château Laville Bertrou, then, in 2002, the Château l’Hospitalet.
The move to biodynamics began in 2002, with a trial on five hectares of the Domaine de Cigalus. At l’Hospitalet, the house now brings together a five-star hotel, a fine-dining restaurant, L’Art de Vivre, and, since 2004, the Jazz à l’Hospitalet festival.
An Official Partner of LaListe, Gérard Bertrand poured his wines at the Gala on November 24, 2025, at the Quai d’Orsay: at the cocktail reception, and two at dinner, the Clos du Temple 2023 rosé and the Legend Vintage 1969 Rivesaltes. That same evening, L’Art de Vivre received the Discovery Gem Award.
