Château Pech-Latt: organic in the Corbières since 1991

A partner of LaListe, Château Pech-Latt makes its wine in Lagrasse, at the foot of the Alaric mountain. It has been organic since the 1991 vintage, one of the first vineyards in the South to make the change.

Château Pech-Latt stands in Lagrasse, in the Aude, in the heart of the Corbières appellation. Its vines fill a natural amphitheatre of hills and garrigue, 150 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Alaric mountain. The estate covers more than 350 hectares, over a hundred of them under vine.

From the monks of Lagrasse to 1903

The place’s history is tied to the abbey of Lagrasse, founded in 779 under Charlemagne: its Benedictine monks are said to have begun growing vines around 784. In the 12th century, a church of Pechlat was among their possessions.

A farmstead was set up in 1499 for cereals and livestock, and a vine is recorded at Pech-Latt as early as 1634. Winegrowing became the estate’s main activity in 1903, alongside olives, cereals and livestock.

An organic pioneer

In 1968, Pech-Latt was one of the first châteaux in the Corbières to destem and crush its grapes. It gave up chemical weedkillers in 1970 and began bottling its wine at the château in 1971.

The 1991 vintage was its first made organically, which put Pech-Latt among the very first vineyards in the South to make the change. Some forty pickers harvest the grapes by hand, and the plots are hoed by hand. Sheep and bats live on the estate, among olive, fig and cypress trees.

Five grapes, five cuvées

The soils mix schist, sandstone, limestone and marl. Five red grapes each lead one of its cuvées: Carignan Le Maquis des Corbes, Grenache Mémoire d’Alaric, Syrah Terres Mûres, Mourvèdre L’Île Ardente and Marselan Jardin Selan. Alongside them are the Grand Vin du Château and the cuvée Réflexion Vincent Pastorello, among others.

Since 2022, the château has been renewing itself: its vat room was entirely redesigned to vinify each plot separately, and each grape as it needs. The Grand Vin du Château 2023 won a gold medal at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge (90/100), and L’Île Ardente 2022 scored 91/100 in The Wine Advocate.
